Play Guitar & Sing at the Same Time (in 3 Easy Steps)

playing guitar and singing at the same
00:02
time is an extremely difficult process
00:04
you could be playing along and as soon
00:06
as you go to sing your strumming hand
00:08
falls apart or vice-versa you’re
00:10
strumming fine and you go to sing and
00:12
words don’t even come out so in this
00:14
video I’m gonna share with you the three
00:15
step process to play in sing any song
00:17
and at the end I’m gonna share with you
00:19
a bonus tip that will help you take this
00:21
even further now when I was first
00:24
playing guitar I learned a Beatles tune
00:26
I’ve just seen a face it was a song my
00:28
dad played and I really wanted to learn
00:30
it and I thought this is cool I knew the
00:32
little run at the end it was just a
00:34
great moment and then in my college days
00:36
I went to a party and there was a guy
00:39
singing and playing the guitar and it
00:41
was like a magical experience everybody
00:43
gravitated towards him and I thought
00:44
well I can do that I know some chords I
00:47
know how to strum so then in the privacy
00:49
of my own room I want to go ahead and do
00:50
it and realized how difficult it truly
00:53
was and that’s what led me to develop
00:56
this three-step process so let’s start
00:58
with step number one I want you to pick
01:01
a song that’s relatively easy and that
01:03
you like I want you to print out the
01:06
chord sheet for it with the lyrics you
01:08
know you can look it up online Google
01:10
any song and put the word chords next to
01:12
it and you get the lyric sheet with the
01:14
chords right above it and then I want
01:15
you to sit down and listen to that song
01:18
with the chord sheet in hand and what I
01:20
want you to listen for is when the
01:22
chords change go ahead and follow the
01:25
lyrics on the sheet and then notice okay
01:28
here comes a chord change and then
01:29
listen for it in the song and identify
01:31
that chord change with a word in the
01:33
song okay that’s step number one we
01:35
don’t even have our guitar yet step
01:37
number two is to grab your guitar and
01:40
just play the changes since the first
01:44
song that I learned how to sing and play
01:45
at the same time was I’ve just seen a
01:47
face by the Beatles I’m gonna go ahead
01:48
and use that as an example here and just
01:51
for the sake of if you want to follow
01:52
along here’s a quick rundown of the
01:54
chords there’s actually not that many it
01:56
starts on a G chord
01:59
it moves to an E minor chord and then it
02:04
goes to a C chord lastly a D chord and
02:09
then it’s back to a G that’s just the
02:13
verse portion of the song but it’ll
02:15
it’ll give you that process enough to so
02:17
you can take this to any song you want
02:19
so just play the changes that’s step
02:22
number two and that’s exactly what I’m
02:23
going to demonstrate here with that
02:25
chord sheet in front of you I want you
02:26
to go ahead and sing along with the song
02:29
and play the chord changes only when it
02:32
changes here’s the example I’ll use that
02:35
that I’ve just seen a face on I’ve just
02:38
seen a face I can’t forget the time or
02:41
place where we just met she’s just the
02:44
girl for me now I want all the world to
02:47
see we met dad and dad
02:53
it was a little late on that last change
02:55
but the idea here is to get your
02:57
fretting hand comfortable changing
02:59
chords while you’re singing okay it
03:02
seems again this seems like an easy task
03:04
but once you start putting all these
03:06
things together it’s like whoa what’s
03:08
going on it’s that classic pat your head
03:10
and rub your tummy kind of conundrum
03:11
so again just play the changes you’re
03:14
looking at the chord sheet singing along
03:16
and playing one strum when the chords
03:19
change you’re probably thinking yourself
03:21
well that’s not very interesting that
03:23
certainly doesn’t sound like singing and
03:24
playing well it’s one step it’s a baby
03:28
step to getting you to that ultimate
03:29
goal of playing and singing a song with
03:32
absolute comfort step number three is to
03:36
take what you know you know how to sing
03:38
the song you know where the chord
03:39
changes happen and you know when to play
03:42
those chord changes and start to add a
03:44
steady downbeat nothing intricate here
03:47
this is just a steady downward strum in
03:50
time literally it’s going to be it’s
03:53
going to sound like a very boring strum
03:54
but this is a necessary step this is a
03:56
critical step a lot of people ignore
03:58
this step and it’s what actually keeps
04:00
them from playing and singing at the
04:01
same time and what I mean by just a
04:03
basic strum is a downward strum all six
04:05
strings just like that
04:08
here’s how it sounds with the song I’ve
04:12
just seen a face I can’t forget the time
04:16
or place where we just met she’s just
04:19
good
04:20
and I want all the world to see we men
04:26
dead and
04:31
and so on and so forth through the
04:33
entire song what that’s doing is its
04:37
allowing you to keep a steady rhythm
04:38
while changing chords and singing and
04:42
again you might be thinking yourself
04:43
well I just don’t want to I just don’t
04:45
want to just do that down strum well
04:48
that brings me to my bonus tip and that
04:51
is this once you have that basic steady
04:54
beat down and singing and you have
04:55
absolute comfort doing that you can take
04:58
your strumming to a whole new level you
05:00
can try different strum patterns and try
05:03
different things and see how they mesh
05:04
with the song itself knowing what you
05:07
know already you can actually already
05:09
diversify the strum pattern that we just
05:12
did instead of just doing all six
05:14
strings on the strum actually alternate
05:17
do the bass note on the one and the
05:19
three beat and a full strum on the two
05:21
and the four beat also known as the boom
05:23
chick strum and that sounds like this
05:30
so if I was to play the song using that
05:32
rhythm it would sound like this
05:34
I’ve just seen fils I can
05:41
please will
05:42
just met she’s just the girl for me now
05:47
on all the world see we met
05:52
dad
05:59
again I just want to repeat these are
06:02
baby steps it’s it’s a great it’s a
06:05
great goal to be able to play and sing
06:07
any song but you have to take these baby
06:10
steps starting with step 1
06:12
grab the song make sure it’s simple and
06:14
identify those changes step 2 just play
06:16
the changes step 3
06:17
use a basic basic steady downbeat to
06:21
play through the song and sing it at the
06:22
same time and the bonus step 4 go ahead
06:25
and diversify your rhythm once you’ve
06:27
gained that comfort now I surely hope
06:29
that was a huge light bulb moment for
06:31
you I know it broke open a whole new
06:33
world of guitar for me when I learned to
06:35
play and sing at the same time and I
06:37
want to keep these light bulb moments
06:38
rolling for you so I’ve created a 45
06:40
minute online acoustic guitar workshop
06:43
that’s absolutely free and it’s going to
06:45
provide three more huge lightbulb
06:47
moments we’re gonna start with basic
06:49
fretboard navigation so you can find any
06:51
note on the fretboard a huge technique
06:54
upgrade so no longer is your fretting
06:56
hand or your strumming hand going to be
06:58
a limiting factor and the third thing
07:00
the thing that nobody ever talks about
07:02
is how to incorporate those very things
07:04
into your daily play so you can live the
07:06
best acoustic life possible and again
07:09
it’s totally free all you have to do to
07:11
participate in it is click the link here
07:13
in the video or in the description below
07:15
and I’ll see you over there thanks a lot
07:24
