10 Step Method Guitar Lesson Singing Tutorial

00:05
hi how you doin Justin here in this
00:08
lesson today I’m going to be taking you
00:09
through my 10 step method on how to play
00:12
guitar and sing at the same time now
00:15
this has probably been the most
00:17
requested lesson that I’ve ever had
00:19
since I started doing lessons online and
00:21
it’s taken quite a lot for me to come up
00:23
with this little plan for you I’ve been
00:25
testing it on myself testing it on my
00:27
friends and my students and I think I
00:29
finally come up with this little program
00:30
that really works a lot of it is down to
00:32
your practice of course before we get
00:35
going on the actual plan there’s a few
00:37
fundamental things that I want to make
00:38
sure that you kind of get and the first
00:40
of those which is probably the most
00:41
important is to realize that you can
00:43
only do one thing at a time so you can’t
00:46
be thinking about playing guitar and
00:48
thinking about singing or what the
00:50
chords are and what the lyrics are and
00:51
that sort of stuff at the same time so
00:54
it’s all about automation you have to
00:57
get stuff automatic and for most people
01:00
it’s getting the guitar sorted so you
01:02
don’t have to think about the guitar
01:04
playing and you can concentrate on the
01:05
singing a few kind of freaky people I’ve
01:07
met over the years that are good enough
01:09
singers that they can turn that on
01:10
automatically and think about the guitar
01:12
but for most of us it’s get the guitar
01:15
kind of sorted and under your fingers
01:16
first and then you can worry about the
01:18
singing part that’s really important it
01:20
also means that if you’re still thinking
01:21
about your chord changes and kind of
01:23
having to look at your chords or look at
01:25
your strumming hand then you might not
01:27
be ready yet for trying to sing and play
01:29
at the same time right so you know
01:31
you’ve got to be fair with yourself here
01:33
if you’re an absolute beginner it’s
01:34
going to be very difficult for you to
01:36
sing and play at the same time now it’s
01:40
also important to realize that this is
01:41
what this leads to is learning one thing
01:43
at a time so you have to learn the vocal
01:46
and learn the guitar and then put them
01:48
together you don’t want to be trying to
01:50
do both of those things at the same time
01:51
and that’s part of this little method
01:53
and also realize that the more you do
01:56
this the faster you’ll get through the
01:59
different stages so even though it seems
02:01
a lot at the beginning as I go through
02:02
it and say you should do this and you
02:03
should do that the better you get at it
02:05
and the more I’ve done it myself the
02:07
faster I can kind of progress through it
02:09
so that I can learn to sing and play a
02:11
song in one sitting really it’s not a
02:14
kind of a long process but it is through
02:16
following these steps
02:18
over a period of time that you get to
02:20
that point so number one first step of
02:24
the little method here is listen to the
02:28
song a lot and I know that might seem
02:30
really obvious but lots of people try
02:31
and sing and play a song that they don’t
02:33
really know that well and that just
02:34
ain’t going to work right so first thing
02:36
you should do headphones in for some
02:38
reason headphones seem to work better
02:40
for me to concentrate and you want to
02:42
listen to the song ten times in a row
02:44
and not let yourself drift off but
02:46
really concentrate on the song try and
02:48
get inside it not just kind of
02:49
stretching the surface of what you
02:51
normally hear try and listen to the
02:53
guitar part really listen to the vocal
02:55
part how do they sit together don’t try
02:56
and play or anything yet just listen
02:58
that’s really important that listening
03:00
thing I really can’t overemphasize how
03:03
important that is as a first step second
03:07
step is learn the guitar part now this
03:10
can be a kind of a simplified version of
03:11
the guitar part because you want
03:13
something that you can get automated
03:14
right so it doesn’t matter if it’s just
03:17
you kind of get the strumming down to
03:18
the bare minimum and leave out all any
03:20
kind of complex little fills or whatever
03:22
you just want to learn the guitar part
03:24
that you’re going to try and sing over
03:26
so kind of strip it back keep it really
03:28
simple keep it simple stupid kiss really
03:30
important thing to remember and really
03:33
work on it if there’s bits that you
03:34
can’t do extract them and work on those
03:37
bits individually because you can’t be
03:38
still thinking about your guitar when it
03:40
comes time to doing the singing now step
03:43
number three is to play the guitar part
03:46
while you have a conversation with
03:48
someone and if you by yourself you can
03:49
have a conversation with your invisible
03:50
friend right but the idea here is can
03:53
you play the guitar part while you’re
03:55
thinking about something else that’s
03:57
really the kind of the test here if
03:59
you’re really ready to sing and play at
04:01
the same time so you should be able to
04:03
sit there and get your chords together
04:05
now I’m thinking about what I’m sending
04:07
you and the different steps of the
04:08
program I’ve got these chords and this
04:11
sequence really kind of under my fingers
04:13
and maybe occasionally my mind kind of
04:16
flicks back to the chords or where we
04:17
are or what’s coming up but it’s really
04:19
that idea of kind of getting it
04:21
automated so you can still think about
04:23
this conversation bit it’s really
04:25
important a really great little test and
04:26
I still do it myself you know if I’m
04:28
learning a new tune I’m doing a lesson
04:30
on something or whatever
04:32
I’ll sit there and play the thing get
04:34
the kind of the guitar part that I want
04:35
first then I’ll just start thinking
04:36
about other stuff what I’m doing later
04:38
or you know what I’m fancy for dinner or
04:40
you know any sort of random thought just
04:42
to make sure that I’ve really kind of
04:44
got that guitar part sorted up that’s
04:45
really quite important now stage four is
04:49
listen to the song a whole lot more but
04:52
this time I really want you to
04:54
concentrate on the singing and just the
04:56
singing so it may be another 5-10 times
04:58
really just completely concentrating on
05:01
the vocal you know how is it some what’s
05:03
how powerful is it how loud how soft is
05:05
it what’s the range how does the melody
05:07
go where are the breaths if you can hear
05:09
them or if that seems obvious you know
05:11
just really really focus on the melody
05:14
and the singing part the part that
05:16
you’re going to do and the more time you
05:18
spend listening to it and concentrating
05:20
on it the easier the rest of this
05:21
process is going to be so the listening
05:23
stages I can’t emphasize it enough
05:25
remember we listen to music that’s how
05:27
we learn music so listening is the most
05:30
important thing so never forget that so
05:32
snowed Stage four here is going to be
05:34
listening as well now stage number five
05:37
is to write out the lyrics now write out
05:41
the lyrics not copy and paste from
05:43
something on the internet and print them
05:44
out there’s something about the
05:46
listening to it you’ve just been
05:48
listening a whole lot right so you’re
05:50
listening to it and writing it down
05:52
there’s something in that process that
05:53
will help you remember them so don’t go
05:55
for that just kind of grab it off
05:57
whatever you know site on the internet
05:59
and then print it out and have it in
06:00
front of you it’s not the same right the
06:02
writing out process is a really
06:04
important bit so the other one the copy
06:07
and paste thing yeah it’s kind of faster
06:09
and easier but it’s kind of cheating and
06:11
I think sometimes you know when you put
06:12
that bit of extra work in you do get the
06:14
benefit so that’s a really important bit
06:16
now the next part is to work on your
06:19
singing a bit so you need to practice
06:21
singing along with the original
06:23
recording so find a version of the
06:25
original recording that you like and
06:27
practice singing along to it and at this
06:29
point you need to be working on your
06:30
pitching and your phrasing making sure
06:32
that you’re singing in tune and that you
06:33
kind of got the the breaths in the right
06:36
point all of that kind of stuff now I’m
06:37
not a singing teacher I don’t really
06:39
consider myself to be a very good singer
06:41
at all so I don’t want to go into the
06:42
idea of doing singing lessons I’m sure
06:45
that there are people
06:45
line doing free sing a lesson somewhere
06:47
I don’t know where but I’m sure there
06:49
are if you if you hunt them down or find
06:51
yourself a vocal coach I’d a vocal coach
06:53
for a little while I found it very very
06:54
helpful not that my singing is great now
06:56
but it’s definitely improved a lot on
06:58
what it was so if you’re struggling with
07:00
the singing part you might want to find
07:01
a vocal coach if not just be singing a
07:04
loads of times along with the song you
07:06
know really fit make sure that you’re in
07:07
tune good idea can be to record yourself
07:10
a little hint if you’re a little
07:11
dictaphone or even the kind of the voice
07:13
recorder that you know built into your
07:15
phone would do and record yourself
07:17
singing along and have a constructive
07:19
listen back to yourself and see what
07:20
bits are working and maybe what bits you
07:22
need to work on so that’s really
07:24
important now stage seven make sure that
07:28
you know what syllables the chords
07:31
change on also very very important so
07:34
not always do the the chords going to
07:38
change at the beginning of a word that
07:39
might be in the middle of a word you
07:42
know so I have to use one of my own
07:44
songs because if I use a another song it
07:46
will kind of make copyright issues so
07:48
some of mine page night you know it all
07:51
I can think about is page 99 so it’s not
07:58
a night it’s 99 is the change now what
08:02
most people do is put a little kind of a
08:03
little arrow headed a little Chevron or
08:05
whatever above the lyric or the syllable
08:07
where the chords change a lot of people
08:09
find that really helpful I certainly did
08:11
way back when I first started seeing
08:13
play at the same time I’d write the
08:14
lyrics out and I’d put these little
08:16
Chevron’s or all around either on the
08:18
beat or where the chord change art was
08:20
depending on kind of what I was
08:21
struggling with you know sometimes they
08:23
the chord change will come after a word
08:25
or just before the word so and part of
08:28
the process again is listening to where
08:30
that happens it’s not just the writing
08:32
it innit going through and listening to
08:34
the song working out where the beat
08:37
falls and where the chord change falls
08:38
in relation to the lyric again it’s
08:40
coming back to listening you know so
08:42
that’s a that’s another really important
08:44
part of the process because it makes the
08:47
next part easy
08:48
now the next one stage eight have to
08:52
make sure to concentrate here and don’t
08:54
muck the order up here
08:55
so stage eight is now going to be
08:57
singing along with the original
08:59
recording
08:59
and playing muted strums on the beat now
09:02
what I mean by that you’re going to be
09:04
holding the guitar with your fingers
09:06
just kind of wrapped over the string so
09:07
you’re not playing actually a chord or
09:09
anything
09:09
and you’re just going to strum down
09:12
strokes on the beat so like 1 2 3 4 and
09:16
do that along with the original
09:18
recording and sing along now if you
09:20
can’t do this you’re really going to
09:22
struggle to play the song and this is
09:24
the first part of kind of automation
09:25
because you’re having to automate that
09:27
strum while you’re doing your singing so
09:30
if I’m doing my tune again this baton I
09:32
be on all I can think about is page 99
09:39
about halfway down starting from
09:44
perspire
09:46
but of course have the original
09:48
recording on at the same time and it’s
09:50
that process of having that strum and if
09:52
you can tap your foot at the same time
09:54
as the other you should hopefully be
09:55
working on tapping your foot all the
09:57
time anyway every time you’re playing
09:59
your guitar you should be tapping your
10:00
foot because it’ll really help develop
10:01
that kind of internal metronome so you
10:04
try to get your foot tapping strumming
10:06
along with the original recording and
10:07
singing along with the words now if you
10:10
struggle with the singing the lyrics
10:11
you could try humming that’s a good way
10:13
of kind of avoiding the stuck on the
10:15
lyrics thing so just hum the melody to
10:17
yourself but if you’ve followed the
10:19
program properly you would have learnt
10:20
the lyrics properly by now or at least
10:22
have a really good idea of the lyrics so
10:24
that shouldn’t be the problem but if it
10:26
is you can try humming and then maybe go
10:28
back and do the lyrics so now you’re
10:32
away from the original recording for
10:33
stage 9 which is to play the chords four
10:38
strums per bar and sing along so you sit
10:41
still really simplified so be
10:45
about is page 99 half wait
10:52
start him from perspire just really
10:59
keeping it simple gives you a chance to
11:01
think about your lyrics because at this
11:03
stage the guitar part should be pretty
11:05
automatic maybe when you first start
11:07
doing it there’s going to be a little
11:08
bit of your brain still thinking about
11:09
the guitar but you want as little of
11:11
that as possible right you really want
11:12
to be concentrating on on your singing
11:14
and getting the lyrics and getting your
11:16
melody sweet you know that’s the point
11:18
of that step you know that it really is
11:21
a big deal so just keeping it real
11:23
simple and being able to get that lyric
11:25
yarn over the top it’ll make a huge
11:27
difference when you get on to the final
11:30
stage just stage 10 which is playing it
11:33
for real so in this case it’s got a
11:36
fingerstyle pattern so and then all I
11:41
can think about is pitch 99
11:45
halfway down starting from perspire etc
11:52
now that’s got a fingerstyle pattern
11:54
which kind of leads me onto some of the
11:55
extra stuff but that’s the basic program
11:58
right and if you follow that and keep it
12:00
real simple for yourself the car sakes
12:02
start on an easy song right that goes
12:03
starting on a difficult one there’s a
12:05
list of them on the website if you find
12:07
this lesson on the website there’s a
12:08
list of a few songs that I think a
12:09
really good easy ones to start off with
12:11
and there’s also a whole bunch more
12:13
helpful hints for you that you might
12:16
find find useful on the website I just
12:18
don’t want to draw this lesson out too
12:19
much but it’s because there’s so many of
12:22
them and also if you get stuck on this
12:24
and you want to go on to the Associated
12:26
forum lesson and ask your questions
12:28
there I’ll update the extra tips part of
12:31
the website so I can help it you know
12:33
answer any more problems before somebody
12:35
else has them you know so that’s the
12:38
program I really really hope that it
12:40
helps you sing and play at the same time
12:42
and that it means that you can have a
12:43
lot of fun with your guitar and playing
12:45
and sing and entertaining your friends
12:46
and I’ll see you for another lesson
12:48
sometime very soon take care of
12:50
yourselves bye bye
