Le Duc’s Student Portfolios
Description
- Length of class: 1 semester, repeatable
- Occupational Ed or Elective: 9, 10, 11, and 12
- Prerequisite: Visual Communications 1 (VisCom 1)
- The world of media is awash in striking images created to capture our imagination and communicate complex ideas. Visual Communications explores the basic, intermediate and advanced levels of black and white 35 mm photography, digital photography, graphics creation, multimedia, and Internet technologies as vehicles for visual expression. Emphasis is placed on personal expression of complex ideas, leadership, and skills development. Students are exposed to the value of being not just consumers but also authors and publishers of media. Issues are raised and discussed about modern expression and its implications.

Grading
- Projects 60%
- Daily or Home Work 20%
- Presentation / Leadership 10%
- Final / Portfolio 10%
Self Authored Projects
- Through project work, technical and creative media skills are developed, working toward mastery
- Projects are composed of a plan and a product
- Each project is about two weeks in length
- Students produce 10 projects throughout the term
- Students compose a plan the first day of a project
- Students present the product the last day of the project cycle

Daily Work
- Students will receive a daily grade for being on task with the daily work. Credit will be reduced for any conduct not contributing to an academic atmosphere. Credit will not be granted if the student is absent, but the points can be made up upon return. Please refer to the online class schedule for missing work and consult with the teacher for make-up work.
Self Evaluation
- Students will publish journal (for those paper-based) or blog entry detailing their work for the previous project
- Included in the entry will be a paragraph highlighting what was done and learned
- A screenshot showing an example of the work and progress will be included

- Students will maintain a journal

Final / Portfolio
- Students will collect evidence of their learning from throughout the term in a portfolio.
- It will be published as a web site.

Leadership
- Students will contribute to the learning community in some meaningful way
- Intermediate students, defined as having taken Introduction to the Communication Arts, will support the learning community by creating and sharing at least one high quality learning resource as evidence of understanding of their learning
- Advanced students, defined as having taken one semester of Visual Communications, will support the learning community by creating and delivering at least one high quality lesson plan as evidence of understanding of their learning
- Student leadership assignments
